The FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup “Aerials” is coming to Lake Placid’s Olympic Jumping Complex on January 16–17!

Watch the world’s best aerial skiers launch skyward, flipping and twisting through the air in a breathtaking competition where every jump matters. Freestyle Aerials skiing is a judged sport, and competitors receive a final score based on  adding together scores for “air” (height and distance from the jump) 20%, “form” (cleanliness of the maneuvers in the air) 50%, and “landing” (smoothness upon landing) 30%, then multiplying that total by the jump’s “degree of difficulty” – with each component judged by a panel of judges.Aerials Skiers “hit” one of 3 kickers, a single, double, or triple. All kickers are six to eight feet wide and are four feet thick at the top, but differ greatly in height. The difference in height corresponds with the differences in the difficulty of tricks that can be executed on each. A single kicker, which is eight feet tall, allows aerial skiers to reach about 20 feet into the air on average, which allows for two twists and one flip on average. A double kicker is 11.75 feet tall, which launches aerial skiers 30 feet into the air, allowing them up to four twists on average. The triple kicker, which is 13.5 feet tall, launches skiers 45-50 feet in the air – allowing for quintuple-twisting triple backflips.

Some common tricks include the following: Full (one flip, one twist), Lay (one flip no twists), Tuck (one flip no twists), Half (one flip, half a twist). These tricks are strung together to form the athletes jump (i.e “Lay Full,” or ” Full Full Full”).

At the event, our experienced announcers will call out the planned jumps and explain the difficulty!

Prohibited Items – For a safe and secure experience, bag checks are at all entrances during events at the Olympic Jumping Complex. Limit purse and bag sizes to 13″ x 9.5″ x 6″. Backpacks and outside beverages are not allowed. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: Glass containers, Hard-sided coolers, Firearms, Explosive and/or incendiary devices, Noxious material, Electronic stun guns, Assault-type items or devices, Edged weapons, Nuisance items & devices, Restraining type items & devices.
